Tea Ceremony and Tea Bowl Class

A very special, two part event, that will introduce participants to the centuries old connection between tea and ceramics.

DATE:

Saturday, August 9th

2:00pm - 5:00 pm

WHERE:

Bitter Root Pottery Aqueous

4655 Admiralty Way, Suite 200, Marina Del Rey, 90292

Miles Bothwell and Koons will present Chaire Kazari (茶入れ飾り), the third procedure in the kazarimono (lit. display matters) series at Bitter Root Pottery Aqueous. Each procedure in this series aims to showcase a specific utensil, often due to its remarkable history, esteemed reputation, or because it was a gift from a respected individual acknowledged by the guests. This particular procedure emphasizes the tea caddy (chaire), which is utilized for a formal and special style of matcha known as koicha (thick tea). In celebration of the opening of Aqueous, we have opted for this formal style, which is not commonly featured in tea demonstrations.

You will share an intimate space with each other over a bowl of fresh matcha and delicious Japanese sweets.
Then Miles will discuss tea ceremony aesthetics and their diverse histories.

Afterward, you will get to sit at the potter wheels and Sandy Beckerman will guide you in a wheel-throwing class to craft your very own tea bowl.

Lastly, you will get to keep the Match Stoneware tea bowl from the ceremony.
